In West of Yellowstone, a bighorn ram stands poised against a soft, atmospheric backdrop — a portrait of strength and quiet awareness in the high country. The cool, misted tones of the background contrast with the warmth of the sheep's coat, creating a sense of depth and stillness. Loosely formed poppies add subtle bursts of color, balancing the muted tones and bringing a touch of wild grace to the composition.
This painting reflects my ongoing pursuit to portray animals as I truly see them — with anatomical accuracy, yet without overworking details. Instead, my goal is to capture their essence: that living presence that breathes beneath the surface.
West of Yellowstone marks a turning point for me as an artist. It brings together the balance I’ve been seeking — between rough brushwork and refinement, form and atmosphere, realism and emotion. When I look at this ram in the low light of my studio, I almost expect him to turn his head — he feels that alive to me.
